Baphomet is the name of the deity that the Knights Templar were accused of heretically worshipping, but the familiar iconography comes to us from the 19th century writings and drawings of the French occultist Éliphas Lévi. According to Aleister Crowley, the Baphomet is a “Symbol of true Magick” and a “hieroglyph of arcane perfection”.
This Baphomet, although painted digitally, draws both its composition and the techniques used in the painting process from traditional Greek Orthodox icons.
