Eyes have long been an apotropaic symbol, used to avert evil and misfortune. Today most of us are perhaps mainly familiar with the blue glass beads popular in the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean, but the Evil Eye has a much longer history.
This pattern draws inspiration from what archaeologists call “eye-cups”. These drinking vessels, which were rather popular in Athens in the late 6th century BCE, were decorated with eyes much like the ones I used in my pattern. These eyes may have some connection to the Gorgon/Medusa, whose eyes are depicted similarly, and whose head or entire figure was used to ward off evil. This Evil Eye pattern also features sirens, a creature that appears on some of these eye vessels.
This Evil Eye pattern comes in five colour variations: Golden Blue, Navy, Oxblood, Sage and Black.
