The Greek god Hermes is many things. He is a a trickster god, a god of divination, a psychopomp leading the dead, even a mighty teacher of enlightenment and the soul’s salvation through what became known as the Hermetic movement. This particular representation draws upon both black figure and red figure vase painting to evoke the expedient messenger aspects of Hermes.

As the messenger of the gods, Hermes has the power to instantly go from one place to the next, ensuring that messages reach their recipients. That is the aspect of Hermes this image calls upon.
